Property historic preservation grants help owners of properties that are historically significant, as well as those who want to maintain or restore their property’s historic character. Each year Congress appropriates money for the Historic Preservation Fund, which is divided among the 50 states, territories, and Freely Associated States of Micronesia. In the past, the SHPOs have offered Conference Scholarships for their community members to attend the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions FORUM. The scholarships are intended to allow preservation commissioners in West Virginia to learn from others and bring back new ideas to their own communities.

In addition to federal funding, the state of Vermont has several grant programs to assist with property historic preservation. The state’s Historic District Preservation Program, for example, provides financial incentives for the owners of incomeproducing properties in historic districts or designated as individual landmarks. This program helps to mitigate increases in property assessments that commonly result from the rehabilitative work of income-producing properties. Other state tax credits and deductions are available for restoration of income-producing properties. Additionally, the state’s historic revolving loan program provides low-interest loans for property owners who wish to restore and stabilize their income-producing properties.
